Scottish Open: Perth snooker player Scott Donaldson through to main draw

Snooker talent Scott Donaldson this week booked his place at the Scottish Open.

The Fair City cueman, currently ranked 35 in the world, defeated Welsh player Jak Jones in qualifying.

Donaldson started strongly and, helped by a 65 break, comfortably claimed the first frame before later securing a 4-2 win.

Former Perth High School student Donaldson was delighted to advance and told the PA: "I’d never come up against Jak before.

“He is a very good player and has improved a lot over the last few years. It was a really good win.

“It was 4-2 but, the two frames he won, he had a century and an 80 break. You can see how good he is with that.

“The qualifiers are really hard. It doesn’t matter who you are playing, it is pretty much a 50/50 game and all on the day. There are a lot of upsets, even if the players don’t see it like that. There are not a lot in the games.

“Even if someone is a big favourite, the margins are so small in snooker. If you aren’t at the table, you can’t do anything about it.”

This season’s Scottish Open is scheduled to take place from December 6-12 but will actually be held in Wales. The event had planned to return to Glasgow’s Emirates Arena but a “contractual issue” sees action switched to Venue Cymru in Llandudno.

On the venue switch for this year’s Scottish Open, Donaldson said: “Obviously the Scottish lads want to do well in their home event.

“It doesn’t really feel like one this year. It’s a decision that has been taken. Hopefully next year it is back to Scotland.”

Donaldson will be back onto the practice table ahead of his next outing at German Masters qualifying in October. He also hopes to squeeze in a couple of St Johnstone games during his time away from tournament action.
