Scottish Motor Racing Club chief to retire

AFTER nearly 30 years of service, Sandy Denham has announced he will retire as chairman and as a director of the Scottish Motor Racing Club on Hogmanay.

Vic Covey Jnr will take over the role of chairman, with chief marshal Richard Burrell becoming vice-chairman.

Sandy has played a key role in the club over the years – boosting its presence in the wider motorsport community and working successfully on plans to attract new drivers.

He ensured a number of SMRC championships have featured on British Touring Car Championship weekends at Knockhill in Fife.

He was also instrumental in developing the club’s highly popular MINI Cooper Cup back in 2003 and, more recently, in getting the Scottish C1 Cup off the ground.

The latter has been hugely beneficial in introducing new racers to both the SMRC and its Knockhill home circuit.

Sandy said: “I’ve very much enjoyed my time with the club and I have met a lot of interesting people over the years. But I now feel it is the correct time to step back and hand over the reins to the next generation.”

New leader Vic is a well-known face within motorsport, having won multiple Scottish MINI Cooper Cup titles and competed in championships across the UK.

He said: “I’m extremely proud to have been appointed as chairman. With a new-look calendar for 2021, it’s going to be a really exciting time for the SMRC.

“I’m looking forward to working with the whole Scottish motor racing community to make our club as successful as we can.

“I have big shoes to fill, however, and, on that note, I’d like to say a personal thank you to Sandy for all his hard work and service over the years.”
