Scottish medical officials test 42 patients for coronavirus in last 24 hours

A further 42 patients in Scotland have been tested for suspected cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

Statistics released by the Scottish Government on Thursday have revealed that 148 patients have been tested for the deadly disease since its outbreak in Chinese city of Wuhan last month.

The figure is a significant increase from the 106 suspected cases of Covid-19 were tested as of Wednesday.

All of the cases tested in Scotland have so far come back negative, but medical chiefs say that there is a “ high likelihood” that a patient will test positive in the future.

Nine out of 2,521 people tested for the virus across the UK have come back positive.

Chief Medical Officers have changed the risk to the UK from low to moderate after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a public health emergency.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock declared the virus to be a serious and imminent threat to the UK on Monday.

In a statement, he said: "In accordance with Regulation 3, the Secretary of State declares that the incidence or transmission of novel Coronavirus constitutes a serious and imminent threat to public health.

"The measures outlined in these regulations are considered as an effective means of delaying or preventing further transmission of the virus."

The Scottish Government moved to set up specialist labs at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh to test patients in Scotland earlier this week.
