Scottish law firm starts the New Year with three senior promotions

Scottish law firm Thorntons has begun the New Year with two newly promoted partners and a new legal director.

The two new partners are Gary Mannion from the personal injury team in Dundee and Lucy Metcalf from the family law team in Edinburgh.

Janice Napier has been appointed to legal director in business law within the commercial property team in Perth.

Mannion studied law at Dundee University then completed his traineeship at Thorntons to become a qualified lawyer.

As an accredited specialist in personal injury law, he is one of the most senior and experienced personal injury lawyers at the firm. He manages a team of paralegals and junior solicitors and appears at Sheriff Courts throughout Scotland.

Metcalf has practised exclusively in litigation and has specialised in family law for the majority of her career. She joined the Thorntons’ family law team in May 2019, helping to build the firm’s reputation in the capital.

Metcalf has particular expertise in cases involving financial issues, particularly company and partnership valuations and pension sharing, and extensive agreement in negotiating and drafting complex minutes of agreement dealing with the disposal and transfer of business assets.

Napier graduated from Aberdeen University and started her career completing a traineeship with an Elgin firm. Dual qualified in Scottish and English law, she is a specialist in commercial property and joined Thorntons in 2006.

Napier advises clients on all aspects of commercial property work, from commercial leasing, development site acquisition and sale and purchase, through to property finance and lease portfolio management.

As legal director, she will continue to be service driven and support the expansion of the commercial property team.

Colin Graham, chairman at Thorntons, said: “It’s an absolute privilege to recognise the commitment, leadership and expertise of our colleagues.

"I admire everyone across the firm for their outstanding work ethic amidst such a challenging backdrop last year and it’s fantastic to start the New Year with two new partners and a new legal director who will play integral parts in our aspirations for the year ahead.”
