Scottish Labour MSP announces plans to quit Holyrood in 2026

SCOTTISH Labour MSP Mercedes Villalba has said she will not be standing for Holyrood again in 2026.

Villalba, a left-wing MSP who represents the North East of Scotland on the regional list, said she was “proud” of her record in Holyrood – but suggested that campaigning “on the streets” was in her future instead.

In a message to constituents announcing her intent to resign, the Labour MSP wrote: “It has been a great honour to represent the North East of Scotland in the Scottish Parliament.

“Four years ago, I stood for election to represent my class in Holyrood. I believed that the insecure contracts, extortionate rents and environmental destruction endured by my generation required principled, authentic and socialist representation in our parliament – I still do.

“I’m proud of my record of work in Holyrood. As the cost of living spiralled, I fought alongside activists and tenants’ unions to win a national rent freeze. In the face of Scottish Government inaction, I consistently made the case for radical land reform to tackle Scotland’s entrenched, arcane patterns of ownership. Together with North Sea trade unions, I campaigned to ensure that workers did not bear the brunt of an unjust energy transition.

“I have been privileged to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with striking workers up and down the country, bringing their struggles from the picket line to parliament.

“From campaigning to end Police Scotland’s training contract with human rights abusers to vocally opposing Israel’s genocide in Palestine, I have used my parliamentary platform to promote international peace and justice.

“Over the course of this summer, I have taken time to reflect on my future in the Scottish Parliament.

“I have decided not to seek re-election next May. I don’t make this decision lightly; however,  I know that it is the right one for me.

“I will continue to work for the peaceful and just world I know is within reach. Real change needs supporters in Holyrood, but it requires a movement on the streets too. See you there.”

To date, three other Labour MSPs have announced their intention to step down at the 2026 elections: Alex Rowley, Sarah Boyack, and former group leader Richard Leonard.
