Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard faces "exodus" claim after second senior staffer quits

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard has lost a second vital member of his team months before the Holyrood election.

It is understood Director of Communications Lynn McMath has been offered a new role outwith the party.

News of her departure comes after party general secretary Michael Sharpe announced his resignation yesterday.

Leonard’s three years as leader have been marked by failures at the ballot box and internal difficulties.

Scottish Labour slumped to fifth place at the European election and lost six of their seven Westminster seats at the general election.

Opinion polls for the Holyrood election have also been dismal, although a poll yesterday offered better news for the party.

Leonard also recently survived a leadership coup after some MSPs declared they had no confidence in him.

He is now facing claims of an exodus of key party personnel ahead of May’s election.

McMath was hired for the comms role in the first half of last year - her second stint working for Labour - and her appointment was welcomed.

Sharpe, a left winger seen as a Leonard ally, has only been in the role for around a year.

A Scottish Tory spokesman said: “Just five months before an election, Labour are in full-on crisis mode again.

“A mass exodus of their top brass is a clear sign of a political party in turmoil.

“The once-great Scottish Labour party are losing staff as quickly as they’re losing supporters.”

A Scottish Labour spokesperson said: "We don't comment on staff."
