Scottish Labour councillor quits party after budget vote row

A Labour councillor has quit the party after failing to vote with her colleagues in setting a budget in North Lanarkshire.

Left winger Angela Feeney was issued with a written warning for her rebellion, but an email has revealed her decision to resign.

Feeney, who was a candidate at the last general election, defied a Labour group decision on the council after disagreeing with the budget proposals.

She said at the time: “Today, with a heavy heart I could not vote for any #BUDGET that will see £31 million of cuts being taken from our communities.

“It is time we offered real #RESISTANCE and say enough is enough.”

A letter from Scottish Labour general secretary Michael Sharpe to Feeney stated the party’s “disputes panel” concluded she had breached the rules.

"The Disputes Panel has consequently decided to issue you with a written warning,” he wrote.

A separate email from Sharpe stated: “I have subsequently received a communication last night from Cllr Feeney to formally resign as a member of the Labour Party and thus from the Labour Group.

“Despite further dialogue this morning Cllr Feeney has reiterated to me her decision to leave the party and serve as an Independent."

A Labour source said:  “This is the right decision from a former member of the Labour Party who believed her own hype.

“It was clear that her repeated breaches of Labour Party rules were beyond the pale even for party headquarters who couldn’t defend her any longer despite her being a former parliamentary candidate and ally of Jeremy Corbyn.”

Feeney has been contacted for comment.
