Scottish Labour candidate mocked for campaigning in wrong constituency

A Scottish Labour candidate has been mocked after mistakenly campaigning in the wrong constituency.

Graeme McKenzie, who is standing for the party in Angus South at next month's election, shared an image of him out sharing leaflets in a town that is no longer part of the seat.

The wannabe MSP tweeted yesterday: "Great leaflet run in Forfar. It’s time for a fresh voice here in Angus South. The voice of the communities here have been left behind for years.”

The town of Forfar has been part of the the Angus North and Mearns constituency since the 2011 Scottish Parliament election.

McKenzie's political opponents were quick to seize on the gaffe.

Scottish Conservative councillor Derek Wann, who sits on Angus Council, told The Courier it was “another embarrassing clanger for Scottish Labour”.

“The candidate has taken the wrong turn off the A90 and there will be some very confused residents in the south of Forfar,” he said.

“How can people in Angus South trust a party on local issues if they don’t even know where the constituency is?

“This just underlines the fact that only the Scottish Conservatives have what it takes to challenge the SNP.”

McKenzie, from Dundee, told the paper: “I should not have crossed the constituency boundary and I apologise unreservedly for my breach of the rules.”

Angus South has been won by Graeme Dey of the SNP at the last two Holyrood elections and is viewed as a two-horse race between the Nationalists and the Conservatives.

The Record has asked McKenzie for comment.
