Scottish kids 'won't wear face masks or social distance' when they go back to school

Scottish school kids shouldn't need to wear face masks or socially distance when they go back to school in August.

The Scottish Government say if the current suppression of coronavirus continues, the vast majority of youngsters will be able to socialise both inside and outside the classroom.

In a paper published this morning government advisors insists evidence suggests no distancing is required in primary schools.

And despite, pointing out it's less clear for older pupils, they advise the same approach in secondary schools.

The paper points out: "At present we support the same approach being taken in secondary schools on the basis of the balance of known risks, the effectiveness of mitigations and the benefits to young people of being able to attend school."

The Covid-19 advisory sub-group on education was published in advance of Nicola Sturgeon's daily briefing.

Education minister John Swinney is also scheduled to update the country on preparations for children returning to school on August 11.

The paper further explains that only children won't be required to wear face coverings unless they are "clinically advised".

But it points out that two metre distancing should remain in place wherever possible between adults and adults and children not from the same household.

Grown-ups will only be required to wear face coverings when they can't adhere to the distancing rule and interacting face-to-face for 15 minutes or more.

The paper explains that individual arrangements will be put in place for people with underlying health conditions and protections for people from BAME communities concerned about infection.

Improved hygiene measures will also be put in place.
