Scottish Junior Cup: Irvine Meadow boss wary of big game hunters Kello Rovers ahead of fifth round clash

Irvine Meadow manager Brian McGinty insists there’s no danger of his side taking anything for granted against Kello Rovers in the Scottish Junior Cup tomorrow.

Meadow are strong favourites to see off the Kirkconnel minnows at Nithside Park and reach the quarter finals of the competition.

But McGinty reckons Rovers will be treating the game like a FINAL and has warned his players not to let their guard down.

It’s the deepest the League One strugglers - managed by former Darvel boss Scott Clelland – have gone in the competition for 40 years – and the town is expected to back them in big numbers on the day.

McGinty said: “We should be better than Kello — we’re the Premiership side and they are two leagues below us — but if we go in with the wrong attitude then anything can happen.

“I’m confident the players will go there with the right mindset but it’s still a really tough draw.

“We know from our own experience that there’s no pressure when you’re the underdogs.

“Kello’s better results this season have come against the better teams and they had a brilliant result on Saturday, beating Larkhall 4-2.

“If we go there with an attitude that isn’t spot on they’ll fancy their chances.”

Meadow go into the tie on the back of a disappointing 1-0 league defeat at Cumnock.

“We didn’t play badly but we didn’t create enough, added McGinty.

McGinty also revealed how his efforts to bolster his squad for the second half of the season have hit a brick wall.

“We tried to bring someone in but the money his club were after was outwith our budget. It’s really difficult but it’s something we’ll maybe try to revisit once we’ve got the Kello game out the way.”
