Scottish Junior Cup: Ayrshire side have what it takes to end 46-year wait for glory, says boss

Brian McGinty insists his Irvine Meadow miracle workers have what it takes to end a 46-year wait for Scottish Junior Cup glory.

Their task has been made that bit easier after Saturday’s second round opponents Buchanhaven Hearts pulled out the tie.

The Aberdeen outfit forfeited their place in the competition after being unable to field a team, handing Meadow a free pass to the third round.

But after watching his patched up side – missing EIGHT regulars – beat Hurlford 2-1 at Blair Park last weekend to go second in the West Premiership, McGinty reckons there’s no reason why they can’t go all the way in a competition they last won in 1973.

He said: “We’re going after it this year. It’s a big trophy for us.

“It’s not a ridiculous statement. We’re not saying we ARE going to win it. But I believe this squad of players can go and beat anybody in a one-off game.

“I said to the players we’ve put a marker down in the league this year by coming here (Hurlford) and winning.

“Any team in our league is capable of winning the Scottish Cup. The favourites are going to come from our league.

“We’ll need to play well over six or seven games, we’ll need the luck of the draw and we need the injuries to clear up .

“But we are in the competition to win it this year. We’re not in it for a cup run to get to the quarter-finals.”
