Scottish International Airshow boss admits hope of keeping show in Ayr rests with South Ayrshire Council

Scottish Airshow bosses admit any hope of the show staying local now rests with South Ayrshire Council.

This year’s aero spectacular was hauled from the skies after a bust-up over funding from County Buildings.

But organisers insist it would be with a heavy heart that they ever moved their event from the Low Green.

Airshow director, Doug Maclean, told the Ayrshire Post: “We know the chances are probably slim, but we’ve never hidden our desire to remain in Ayr.

“The Low Green is such a fabulous setting with three miles of coastline stretching out.

“You literally could not wish for a better location to host an Airshow, which is what made it so popular with spectators and performers alike.”

Mr Maclean, who ruled out a move to elsewhere in Ayrshire, admits interested parties have approached the Airshow over upping sticks.

But he confessed: “The current climate means nothing can be progressed at this stage.

“What I would say is, given the choice, we would not move from our base in Ayr.

“We established the show here for a reason and have always believed in its ability to be a vital economic driver for the region.”

Council officials blew the whistle on their funding deal last December when claiming they had made a payment of £80,000 to the Airshow ‘in error’.

The legal fallout saw them rip up their £250,000 contract to back the event, insisting organisers had “breached a number of terms” of their agreement – a claim hotly disputed by the Airshow.

Mr Maclean said: “You never give up hope of something happening down the line, but the ball is very much in the council’s court now.

“We are always open to suggestions. “We are still being approached by people wanting to come back and perform at Ayr.

“Just the other week we had the Swiss Air Force on to us wanting to display because they had enjoyed it here so much.

"And the RAF have always treated us very well with the Red Arrows coming for regular displays, which shows the esteem with which Ayr and the event is held.”

A council spokesperson said: “Future funding of any events will be informed by the council’s tourism and events strategy which will be developed in the coming year in light of the impact of COVID on the visitor economy.”
