A POPULAR online forum has banned expressing support for Scottish independence.
The r/AskBrits subreddit on Reddit has banned users from all “anti-British sentiment”.
A user on the discussion page, which boasts 62,000 members, responded to a thread asking what it would take for them to back Labour by saying the party would need to “support Scottish independence”.
They were promptly kicked off the page but challenged the ban.
The user, who goes by the handle UberPadge, was told by the forum moderator: “We don’t allow anti-British nationalism.”
UberPadge responded asking whether it was “genuinely your answer” that the forum allows people to discuss various topics “as long as their answers don’t disagree with our political leanings”.
The forum’s fourth rule is a ban on anti-British sentiment which it defines thus: “This rule covers xenophobia against Brits, the UK, or any nationality, identity or region within the UK.
"No hating on the UK, no non-British nationalism (eg. Ireland, Argentina, the US), separatism from any region of the UK, or anti-British sentiment – we have a strict no tolerance policy for this. It's the main purpose of the subreddit!”
Recent tantalising topics discussed on the forum include whether people feel emptying their dishwasher is made easier by emptying it onto a worktop first and advice on moving to the Isle of Wight. Riveting stuff.
So there you have it. You really can “ask Brits anything”, just as long as you’re not expressing a view held by around half the population of the second biggest country in the United Kingdom…
