Scottish independence poll shows support for remaining in United Kingdom has risen

Support for Scotland remaining in the United Kingdom has risen, according to the latest opinion poll on the matter.

The Savanta ComRes survey for The Scotsman predicts that 48 per cent of the people asked would vote No in a constitutional vote, while 45 per cent would return a Yes vote.

The remainder of the people asked were undecided.

According to the latest survey, which asked 1,001 Scottish adults their opinion, when "don't knows" are excluded, 52 per cent would decide to stay in the UK while 48 per cent would chose to become an independent country.

A poll at the start of April found that if an independence referendum was to be held tomorrow, 45% would vote Yes and the same proportion No, with the remainder undecided.

The latest poll was carried out between April 16 and 20.

There has been increased support for the union parties despite Douglas Ross' personal favourability rating falling two points to net -13.

Anas Sarwar has seen his rise by four points to +6, making him the second most popular politician behind Nicola Sturgeon on the poll.

The same poll predicted that the SNP could miss out on a majority at Holyrood.

Sturgeon's party would return 63 seats, while the Scottish Conservatives would be the second largest party with 32 MSPs in the chamber.

Despite high approval ratings it is not translating into seats for Labour, they would have just 17 seats - down three on 2016.

The Greens would have eight while the Lib Dems would secure five.
