Scottish independence poll shows 55% back a Yes vote

Scots would back independence with 55% for Yes, a new poll suggests.

The survey by Panelbase reflects a reversal of the 2014 referendum which ended 55-45 in favour of staying in the UK.

It was commissioned by pro-indy organisation Business for Scotland and is the latest in a run of polls showing a majority wants to end the Union.

Crucially, the latest poll shows a slim pro-indy majority when undecided voters are included in the results.

It was based on the same question from 2014 when voters were asked: “Should Scotland be an independent country.”

The results were Yes 51%, No 42%, Undecided 7%. When undecideds were stripped out, the result is 55-45 for Yes.

Chief executive of Business for Scotland Gordon MacIntyre-Kemp said: “The reversal of the 2014 result is a huge landmark. 55% Yes will send shockwaves throughout the political world.

“There is no conclusion to draw from this new set of data other than the writing is very definitely on the wall for the union.”

A poll by the same organisation showed support was at 54% in June.

SNP depute leader Keith Brown said: "With consecutive polls putting support for independence above 50%, it's clear this is not a trend but the established position of the Scottish electorate."
