Scottish independence not top priority for most voters, poll finds

Fewer than one in five voters rate Scottish independence as their number one priority ahead of next month's election, a new poll has found.

The survey by Savanta ComRes found that 45% of respondents rated the state of the economy as their top concern, while 31% selected education and Brexit being chosen by 25%.

Just 19% of the 1,000 people surveyed selected independence as their top priority.

But the poll also found that 53% of voters believe an IndyRef2 should take place within the next five years, while 22% said a future referendum should be ruled out entirely, once people who expressed no opinion were excluded from the total.

Voters who indicted they would be voting for the SNP were also asked whether they were likely or unlikely to vote for Alba on the regional list.

More than two-thirds (70%) of voters said they would be ‘unlikely’ to vote for Salmond’s party, with 59% overall saying they would be “very unlikely” to do so.

A further 12% said they were “somewhat unlikely" to back the former first minister’s party, while more than one in five stated they were likely to do so (21 per cent).

Political campaigning ahead of May's election was suspended on Friday following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh.

MSPs will be able to attend a special session at the Scottish Parliament on Monday morning to pay their respects, with some campaigning expected to resume on the same day.

The Scottish Conservatives confirmed today they would resume campaigning on Tuesday, with a suspension on Saturday when Prince Phlip's private funeral is due to take place on Saturday at Windsor Castle.
