Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie forced to apologise for cycling wrong way up one-way street

Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie has apologised for cycling the wrong way up a one-way street... after initially claiming he didn’t.

Scotland’s Active Transport Minister was filmed in dispute with a motorist who he accused of driving towards him.

In response to accusations he was responsible for the flashpoint in Glasgow, Harvie responded on Twitter: “No. I was coming out of the park onto a two-way street, You had plenty of time to see me but you drove right at me.”

But dashcam footage of the incident at Greendyke Street on September 13 emerged showing Harvie cycling in the wrong direction up the one-way street. He then veers into a filter lane where motorists would not normally have to give way.

Harvie appears to shout something at the driver who approaches him before braking.

Harvie has now admitted he was in the wrong while insisting the driver was still partly to blame. He said: “I came into the road slightly too early, and I’m sorry about that... despite my mistake, it was no excuse for a driver to aim directly at me.”

Harvie has been criticised for refusing to wear a helmet despite being put in charge of cycling policy. He claimed helmets were “not my style” and that it made cycling look like an “extreme sport”.

Tory MSP Graham Simpson said: “If he wants to encourage people to take up cycling, perhaps he could start practising what he preaches.”
