Scottish Government should appoint vaccine minister who can focus on roll-out

It is vital the Scottish Government gets it right over the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The potentially life-saving jabs will be given in Scotland from tomorrow.

Public health minister Joe FitzPatrick has had a tough week and the SNP’s opponents haven’t been slow in pointing it out.

Whether he is the right man to oversee the vaccine programme is a matter of opinion but in some ways it is a moot point. What is important is that the person leading the operation is able to give the job their undivided attention.

Willie Rennie is right to point out it is the “most important job in government right now”.

We echo the Scottish Lib Dem leader’s call for a dedicated minister to deal with the rollout.

News of the vaccine was dubbed a “light at the end of the tunnel”. It gave the nation hope.

Making sure it is administered in the right way, as quickly and efficiently as possible, is essential if we are to return to some degree of normality soon.

Lockdown measures are hugely damaging to the economy and the mental health of the nation.

The only way to defeat Covid is through vaccination.

The Scottish Government should appoint a vaccine minister who can fully focus on the project.

The country cannot afford to get this wrong.

Equip our nurses

A frustrated nurse has told the Record frontline medics are still not being equipped with the correct PPE to do their jobs.

We first reported on these worrying claims in May, at the height of the pandemic. And now, seven months later, it appears health bosses still haven’t got it right.

The commitment of our medical workers has always been remarkable.

Today, we tell of a theatre nurse who is retiring after 54 years in the job.

You don’t work for as long as Issy Jackson if you are not dedicated to helping others.

The level of professionalism and care shown by Issy and her colleagues deserves the very best support.

We are deep into the greatest health crisis in living memory.

We should not have to report that some nurses still don’t have the right tools to do the job.

Golf loses Voice

Peter Alliss was an authoritative broadcaster of the old school.

His easy charm and expert analysis made him the perfect commentator for the sport he loved.

He was indisputably the Voice of Golf.
