Scottish Government makes UK football bailout request as stark closed door figures laid bare

Scotland's Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing has requested "urgent discussions" with Westminster over a financial package to bail out football.

New coronavirus restrictions were introduced by both governments this week, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson warning fans may not be able to attend matches for up to six months.

That could spell financial ruin for Scottish clubs, who generate 43 per cent of their total revenue from gate receipts.

On Wednesday the SPFL and SFA joint response group announced minister Joe FitzPatrick MSP has written to the UK Minister for Sport and Civil Society seeking priority talks regarding a package of financial recovery for sport, accessible to Scotland.

SFA president Rod Petrie said: "We understand the challenges and decisions facing the Scottish Government and society as a whole and Scottish football will continue to play its part in helping the country overcome the pandemic.

“It is also incumbent on us to safeguard the futures of our football clubs, whilst at the same time respecting and adhering to public health guidelines.

"We welcome the correspondence from Scottish Government to the UK Minister for Sport and Civil Society and hope for a positive outcome for the national game and Scottish sport as whole.”

Neil Doncaster, CEO of the SPFL, commented: “We are engaging with the Scottish Government to underline the existential threat to many of our clubs, and to the huge community, economic and sporting benefits they deliver, if this grave situation continues without meaningful public financial support.

"We therefore welcome the intervention of the Scottish Government in seeking urgent discussions with the UK Government about a package of financial recovery for Scottish sport.”

Clubs across the country are facing a financial black hole, with no prospect of fans returning in the near future.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “We recognise this has been an enormously challenging time for football and we appreciate the support of supporters, clubs and football authorities over the past months to help us tackle the virus.

“These sport has a significant economic impact, but importantly also brings enjoyment to the many people who watch and play, and we don’t want supporters to be delayed in returning to stadiums for any longer than is absolutely necessary.

“However, as the First Minister said this week, the virus has not gone away.

“Minister for Sport Joe FitzPatrick has written to his UK counterpart Nigel Huddlestone today seeking an urgent meeting to discuss financial recovery support for sport, and the Scottish Government will continue to work closely with the governing bodies of football to ensure its long-term sustainability.”
