Scottish Government confirms two further Covid-19 deaths in Tayside

The Scottish Government has confirmed two additional coronavirus deaths in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 226 new cases were recorded overnight in the region.

The area's death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - now sits at 763.

In total, Tayside has recorded 54,768 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The new total includes nine new cases of the new Omicron variant, a total of 14 to date.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 90.4% of the over-12 population have received at least one coronavirus vaccination, and 82.8% have received at least two.

Around 52.5%% have also received a third vaccination.

Across the country, 5,155 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day - a total of 777,885 since the pandemic began.

Of the new cases, 265 are the infectious Omicron variant.

Sadly a further 22 Covid-confirmed deaths have also been recorded, putting the country's overall death toll from the virus at 9,746.

A further three people have been admitted to intensive care.

Meanwhile, 4,358,262 over-12s - 91.1%% of the adult population - have received at least one Covid jab while 3,981,108 (83.2%) have received two.

A total of 2,254,264 people (47.1%) have also received follow-up booster shots.

The new figures come after Deputy First Minister and Covid Recovery Minster John Swinney said the Scottish Government could not rule out introducing new measures to halt the spread of the deadly virus.

The Omicron variant is expected to become the dominant strain in Scotland in a number of days with the R number - the number of people a Covid carrier is expected to infect - predicted to be as high as four.

Asked about the likelihood of new measures, Swinney told the BBC's Good Morning Scotland: "Potentially, that would be the case but we obviously want to avoid that.

"We hope that we've done enough in the announcements that were made yesterday.

"We hope that members of the public and businesses will work with us and in a cooperative spirit to make sure that we can take these provisions forward.

"We have a variant that is very powerful that is growing at an alarming rate and we face a very severe situation.
