Scottish Government confirms three new deaths from Covid in Tayside

The Scottish Government has confirmed three coronavirus deaths were reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 222 new cases were recorded overnight in the region.

The area's death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - now sits at 749.

In total, Tayside has recorded 51,511 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 90.1% of the over-12 population have received at least one coronavirus vaccination, and 82.1% have received at least two.

Around 39.2% have also received a third vaccination.

Across the country, 2,888 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day - a total of 718,285 since the pandemic began.

Sadly a further 21 Covid-confirmed deaths have also been recorded, putting the country's overall death toll from the virus at 9,545.

A further five people have been admitted to intensive care.

Meanwhile, 4,338,509 over-12s - 90.7% of the adult population - have received at least one Covid jab while 3,944,215 (82.5%) have received two.

A total of 1,568,475 people (32.8%) have also received follow-up booster shots.

The latest figures come after Nicola Sturgeon urged Scots not to "press the panic button" amid concern over a new variant of Covid-19.

The First Minister said today more expert analysis was required of the strain, reported in Africa, to understand its potential threat.

Asked about the prospect of more restrictions, she said: "I don't think we should get ahead of ourselves and I don't think we should be pressing the panic button around any of this.

"But there is no doubt that developments in the last 24 hours around this new variant are the most significant and the most concerning that we have had in the last few months.

"The World Health Organisation, I know, is very concerned about this variant and is meeting itself to consider how it categorises the threat."
