Scottish Government confirms THREE deaths and 707 new Covid cases in Tayside

The Scottish Government has confirmed THREE new coronavirus deaths were reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

The area's death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - rises to 785.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 707 new cases were recorded overnight in the region.

In total, Tayside has recorded 73,087 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 333,247 people have had at least one jag, 309,024 have received at least two, while 242,568 have also received a third, or booster, vaccination.

Across the country, 10,392 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day - a total of 1,067,028 since the pandemic began.

There were 16 Covid-confirmed deaths reported meaning the country's overall death toll from the virus rises to 9,950

There are currently 1,479 people in Scotland's hospitals being treated for covid with 54 in intensive care.

The figures come as Boris Johnson is facing fresh calls to resign as Prime Minister over revelations that he attended another Downing Street garden party at the height of last year’s covid lockdown.

Ian Blackford, the SNP Westminster leader, said Johnson was “sticking two fingers up at everybody else” by allowing Downing Street staff to gather at a second alleged summer party last May.

The Prime Minister is facing fury from within his own party over a bombshell leaked e-mail showing more than 100 No10 staff were invited to a ‘bring your own booze’ drinks party on May 20 last year.

Blackford said: "The Prime Minister and others were telling people what they should do, and then effectively sticking two fingers up to everybody else by having this party by encouraging people to bring their own booze.'

"This wasn’t about having a drink at home, this was a deliberate attempt to have a party in contravention of the rules and the law when we know that many people were being arrested charged, and facing criminal sanctions as a consequence.”
