Scottish Government confirms THREE Covid deaths in Tayside in the last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed there were THREE coronavirus deaths reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 240 new cases were recorded across the region overnight.

The region’s death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - has increased to 739.

In total, Tayside has recorded 49,972 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 329,828 people in Tayside have received their first dose, 300,342 have had their second and 128,710 their booster, or third, dose.

Across the whole of Scotland there were 19 further Covid-confirmed deaths in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 3,090 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It means the national death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – has increased to 9,467.

There are currently 785 people in Scotland’s hospitals confirmed to have the virus with 64 being treated in intensive care.

The figures come as MPs were warned that many pubs and restaurants won't survive the winter if the Covid passport scheme is extended.

A Scottish Parliament committee was told people will simply throw house parties if new rules put them off visiting bars and other premises.

The warning comes from licensed trade representatives, and follows Nicola Sturgeon's suggestion that plans were being considered which could see the passport scheme extended to cinemas, theatres and other hospitality venues.

Gavin Stevenson, of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, said: "It would be naive to think if people are excluded from going into hospitality venues - because of they haven't got a covid passport, or perhaps they haven't been double vaccinated - they are going to go home and put pyjamas on and watch television.
