Scottish Government confirms THREE Covid deaths in Tayside in the last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed there were THREE coronavirus deaths reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 248 new cases were recorded across the region overnight.

The region’s death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - has increased to 736.

In total, Tayside has recorded 49,732 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 329,766 people in Tayside have received their first dose, 300,229 have had their second and 126,606 their booster, or third, dose.

Across the whole of Scotland there were 29 further Covid-confirmed deaths in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 3,235 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It means the national death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – has increased to 9,448.

There are currently 786 people in Scotland’s hospitals confirmed to have the virus with 63 being treated in intensive care.

The figures come as Deputy First Minister John Swinney claimed Scotland will enjoy a much more 'normal' Christmas in 2021.

Swinney says things could look a lot more like they usually do this year after a festive period unlike any other in 2020.

He told the BBC: "I think if people are careful, and as long as we continue to adhere to the baseline measures we have in place, then I think people can experience a normal Christmas.

"The warning the government has had to make is that this is an unpredictable pandemic and we have to look at the sequence of events and make sure we have in place the appropriate measures to protect the public to enable life to go on as normal."
