Scottish Government confirms one death and 176 new covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that one person has died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland also showed that 176 new cases had been identified overnight.

The figures bring the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 7,647.

There are currently 93 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 12 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic hit stands at 224,851.

To date 2,764,607 people have received their first vaccination with 993,180 having a second jab.

The figures come as a Falkirk care home was exposed for accepting 'uncontrolled admissions' of Covid patients suffered shocking death toll.

The Crown Office is investigating 26 fatalities at Newcarron Court in Falkirk – the fourth-highest number among 1100 facilities in Scotland.

In April, The Sunday Mail revealed how staff had been told individuals “highly likely” to be infected with Covid would be arriving from hospitals.

The story sparked one of the biggest scandals of the pandemic after it became clear the shocking policy was widespread and could be behind deadly outbreaks claiming hundreds of lives.

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman was forced to announce rules had been changed to end the discharge of untested patients – though it continued behind the scenes.
