Scottish Government confirms NO deaths from Covid in Tayside

The Scottish Government has confirmed NO coronavirus deaths were reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 214 new cases were recorded overnight in the region.

The area's death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - remains the same at 757.

In total, Tayside has recorded 52,968 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The latest local vaccination data shows 331,018 have received their first coronavirus vaccination, 302,216 their second and 167,571 their booster or third dose.

Monday's figures are always announced with the caveat that most registry offices are closed over the weekend so deaths can't be registered.

NHS Tayside has released its daily covid figures (Submitted/Kilmarnock Standard)

Across the country, 3,894 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day - a total of 743,496 since the pandemic began.

Because of the weekend closure of registry offices, there were no Covid-confirmed deaths recorded overnight - meaning the total remains at 9,649 since the pandemic began.

There are currently 591 people in Scotland's hospitals with 43 in intensive care.

Reporting issues experienced over the weekend for the UK Government pillar 2 tests have now been resolved. Today’s figures are higher than expected due to the backlog of tests now being processed.

The latest figures come as the Daily Record evealed that proof of a negative coronavirus test will enable entry into venues and events subject to the vaccine passport scheme in Scotland from today.

Previously, those attending any event of 10,000 or more people, unseated outdoor events of 4,000 or more and indoor seated events of 500 or more - unless exempt - had to show proof of being fully vaccinated against covid.

The scheme also applies to clubs, defined as late night premises with music and a dancefloor, which serve alcohol at any point between midnight and 5am.

From 5am on Monday people will be able to show a record of a negative test - either from a lateral flow device or PCR - in the past 24 hours to gain entry as alternative to proof of vaccination.

It comes as cases of the new Omicron variant shot up by 18 in the last 24-hour period in Scotland.

There are now 48 cases of the variant across the country.
