Scottish Government confirms no Covid deaths in Tayside in the last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed there were NO coronavirus deaths reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 179 new cases were recorded across the region overnight.

The region’s death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - remains the same at 730.

In total, Tayside has recorded 48,961 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 329,524 people in Tayside have received their first dose, 299,899 have had their second and 119,548 their booster, or third, dose.

Across the whole of Scotland there were also NO further Covid-confirmed deaths in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 2,288 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It means the national death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – remains the same at 9,389.

There are currently 771 people in Scotland’s hospitals confirmed to have the virus with 57 being treated in intensive care.

The figures come as news emerged that nurses have backed strike action in an escalating row with the Scottish Government.

Close to 90 per cent of nursing staff who responded to an indicative ballot have backed industrial action.

Around 58 per cent of that number have voted to strike.

It comes as an adviser to Nicola Sturgeon on the covid pandemic announced that Scots could be asked to wear masks all day at their workplace if they can't work from home.

Professor Linda Bauld, an expert in public health at the University of Edinburgh, said case numbers of the deadly virus have been too high across the country.

Last week Deputy First Minister John Swinney hinted there could be an extension of the covid vaccine passport to some parts of the hospitality sector due to rising cases.

More than 3,000 cases of the virus have been recorded in Scotland in the last 24 hours which is the fifth day in a row they have exceeded 3,000.

More Scots who are eligible can now book their Covid booster and flu vaccination appointments through an online portal.

Those aged 50 to 59, unpaid carers who are 16 and over, and over-16s who are household contacts of immunosuppressed individuals are now able to use the portal to book their autumn/winter vaccination appointments.
