Scottish Government confirms five deaths and 178 new Covid-19 cases overnight

The Scottish Government has confirmed that five people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland also showed that 178 new cases had been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 7,659.

There are currently 70 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 12 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic hit stands at 225,861.

So far 2,796,810 Scots have had the first vaccine with 1,184,629 having a second dose.

It comes after Boris Johnson was framed as a liar in the Commons for failing to admit to alleged remarks about allowing to let “bodies pile high” instead of seeing another covid lockdown.

SNP leader Ian Blackford silenced the chamber when he asked the scandal-ridden Tory leader: “ Are you a liar?”.

Johnson angrily denied he ever made the astonishing remark.

Elsewhere it was confirmed that an extra 60 million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech covid vaccine have been secured by the UK for booster jabs.

The additional doses will be used alongside other approved vaccines for the booster programme, which is set to begin in the autumn.

Booster shots are designed to provide an immune system top-up while also offering some extra protection against new variants.
