Scottish Government confirms eight deaths and 1,542 new Covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that eight people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures that 1,542 new cases had also been recorded overnight in Scotland.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 8,029.

There are currently 353 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 41 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 360,983.

4,044,950 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,412,051 have received their second.

The latest figures come as Scots are expected to pile into nightclubs and pubs this weekend as the country enjoys their first full weekend of new freedoms.

Current rules mean that all businesses will be allowed to reopen, while the majority of restrictions in the hospitality sector have been lifted.

Despite the return to normality, health and government officials are still urging Scots to act cautiously on their nights out.
