Scottish Government confirms 785 new Covid cases and three deaths in Tayside

The Scottish Government has confirmed three new coronavirus deaths were reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

The area's death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - now sits at 775.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 785 new cases were recorded overnight in the region.

In total, Tayside has recorded 62,439 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The new total includes 640 cases of the new Omicron variant, up from 487 the previous day.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 90.7% of the over-12 population have received at least one coronavirus vaccination, and 83.3% have received at least two.

Around 63.7% have also received a third vaccination.

Across the country, 11,962 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day - a total of 914,841 since the pandemic began.

Of the total, 13,649 are the infectious Omicron variant.

Sadly a further 13 Covid-confirmed deaths have also been recorded, putting the country's overall death toll from the virus at 9,858.

A further three people have been admitted to intensive care.

Meanwhile, 91.5% of over-12s have received at least one Covid jab while 83.9% have received two.

Around 62.3% have also received follow-up booster shots.

The figures come as a Dundee-based expert warned that the NHS faces a "substantial wave of hospitalisations" if rising Covid cases are not brought under control.

Professor James Chalmers, consultant respiratory physician at the University of Dundee, says that while the Omicron variant appears to be less severe than others the sheer number of cases could cancel out its lesser nature.

He said: "Unfortunately the number of cases are so high the sheer volume of cases may cancel out any reduction in severity that we are seeing with this virus.

"The NHS is really struggling at the moment and I am really concerned about how it is going to fare when the hospitalisation numbers for Covid really increase in January and February."

Today's update is the final one for several days. No local coronavirus data will be posted until January 5 due to the public holidays on January 3 and 4 in lieu of New Year's Day and January 2 falling on a weekend.

However, national headline data will be published as normal.
