Scottish Government confirms 2,888 new cases and 21 deaths in last 24 hours

The  Scottish Government has confirmed there have been 2,888 new  Covid-19 cases in the latest 24 hour period.

According to the latest figures for Scotland there were 21 new deaths recorded, bringing the total number since the pandemic began to 9,545.

The total number of cases since March 2020 stands at 718,285.

There are also 60 patients in intensive care units across the country.

To date, 4,343,208 people have received their first vaccination with 3,944,225 having had a second jab.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon said Scots should not be "pressing the panic button" over growing concerns about a new variant of covid discovered in southern Africa.

The  First Minister  said today more expert analysis was required of the strain to understand its potential threat.

The Scottish Government last night announced  travellers from six countries  - South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Botswana - will be required to self-isolate and take two PCR tests when arriving in the country.

UK health secretary Sajid Javid said experience has shown "we must move quickly and at the earliest possible moment".

He said the new variant might be more transmissible, vaccines might be less effective against it and it might affect one of the UK's major treatments, Ronapreve.

No cases of the variant have yet been detected in the UK.
