Scottish Government confirms 19 covid deaths and 2,086 new cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed 19 coronavirus deaths overnight and 2,086 new positive cases.

The latest figures were announced this afternoon as the virus continues to spread across the country.

543 people are currently in hospital with 47 requiring intensive care as they battle the virus.

A total of 323,288 Scots have now caught coronavirus since the start of the pandemic with 7,791 deaths recorded.

3,956,549 people have now had their first dose of the vaccine while 2,927,130 have had their second.

The news comes as Jason Leitch admitted Scotland's vaccination roll-out is “slowing a little bit” as health boards struggle to contact younger adults.

The Scottish Government adviser urged young Scots to come forward for jabs - insisting that “to get out the end of the pandemic, globally and in Scotland, we need big population immunity numbers”.

The number of vaccinations reached a three-month low this week, with 17,749 injections – including 7,163 first doses – administered on Monday, and Leitch appealed to those who have not yet come forward.

It comes as health officials reported that 135 Scots aged 20 to 39 were hospitalised with the covid in the first week of July - more than in early January at the height of the second wave.

A man in his early 40s died from the virus in South Lanarkshire last week, and a woman in her early 40s from Falkirk died the week before.
