Scottish Government announces two deaths and 3,833 new Covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed there have been two coronavirus deaths and 3,833 new cases overnight.

The death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – now stands at 8,378.

There are currently 1,074 people in Scottish hospitals battling the virus, with 100 being treated in intensive care.

Some 4,155,048 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,806,980 have received their second dose in Scotland.

The new figures come as a warning has been stating that care services are coming under extreme pressure due to rising numbers of coronavirus cases.

Care bosses in East Ayrshire have admitted that, for critical community health and care services, there is “increasing demand” and staffing is under “extreme pressure.”

In recent days the area has seen the highest rates of coronavirus infections recorded.

The pandemic, along with Brexit, has also been blamed for supply chain issues resulting in product shortages in supermarkets across the UK..

Desperate haulage firms have been forced to dramatically increase wages of drivers and have offered fresh incentives to lure new drivers into the industry as they bid to plug the gaps.

Scotland's booster jab programme will kick-off next week and is intended to prolong the protection that Covid jabs provide.

Frontline health and social care workers will be able to book their booster appointment from Monday September 20, as will elderly care home residents.
