The latest figures for Scotland showed that 6,029 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 8,118.

There are currently 585 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 54 being treated in intensive care.

So far 4,106,408 people have received their first vaccination with 3,680,761 having a second jab.

They confirmed that NHS Lanarkshire is the worst-hit region in Scotland with 853 cases 100,000 people as of Monday August 30.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde then comes second in the list with 748.5 Scots per 100,000 suffering from the deadly virus.

The other six health boards included are Lothian, Dumfries and Galloway, Forth Valley, Ayrshire and Arran, Highland and Fife.

It follows the easing of coronavirus restrictions on Monday August 9.
