Scottish Government announces seven coronavirus deaths overnight amid 844 new cases

A further seven people have died due to coronavirus, the Scottish Government have confirmed.

The latest figures reveal the death toll now stands at 3,503 since the beginning of the pandemic in March.

Another 844 people have also tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of cases to 88,361.

The latest numbers show that 1,170 people are being treated in hospital for the virus with 95 in intensive care.

It comes after the Sunday Mail revealed  that elderly hospital patients infected with Covid-19 will still be sent into care homes despite assurances they would first need a negative test result.

Health Secretary  Jeane Freeman  is facing a furious backlash after admitting the shocking practice – believed to have contributed to deadly outbreaks during the first wave of the pandemic – is still allowed under her official guidelines.

Government guidance, updated last month, states patients who test positive for Covid-19 could still be moved back into care homes.
