Scottish Government announces one new Covid death amid 270 cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that one more person has died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 270 new cases had been identified overnight, bringing the total number since the pandemic began to 228,693.

It means the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - is 7,662.

There are currently 63 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 4 being treated in intensive care.

2,968,169 people have received the first dose of vaccination, with 1,551,339 getting their second.

A government advisory group of scientists are reportedly set to hold an emergency meeting today amid concerns over the so-called Indian variant of coronavirus across the UK.

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) is said to be alarmed by the number of new cases of the strain, which has been attributed to a sharp spike in cases in India.

There are fears that the variant could put in the brakes on planned lockdown easing across the UK over the coming weeks.

The Scottish Government’s Covid-19 Advisory Group interprets the advice made by SAGE and how it could potentially have an effect on the crisis in Scotland.
