Scottish Government announces one death and 799 new covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that one person has died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 799 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 7,943.

There are currently 407 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 60 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 347,005.

To date 4,012,496 people have received their first vaccination with 3,214,801 having a second jab.

The figures come as Nicola Sturgeon is due to give an update on whether Scotland can move away from a levels system tomorrow.

The First Minister will address MSPs tomorrow and is also expected to give a lengthy statement on the current situation.

While the majority of restrictions will be dropped if lockdown is lifted, mask wearing will still be expected in enclosed spaces.

It comes as covid-19 cases have fallen in recent weeks after a rise due to the Delta variant which originated in India earlier this year.
