Scottish Government announces no deaths and 6,934 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government have confirmed no people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The death toll since March 2020 – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – is 10,198.

The latest figures for Scotland showed 6,934 new cases had also been identified overnight.

There are currently 1,435 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 38 being treated in intensive care.

However the Scottish Government added: "NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde did not submit data in time for this update; figures from Friday have been carried forward for this Board.

"Please note that on Saturday 22 January we incorrectly reported that there were 16 patients in ICU with recently confirmed COVID-19 – we should have reported that there were 42 patients in ICU with recently confirmed COVID-19, and we apologise for this error."

So far 4,406,439 people have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccination, 4,108,252 given a second dose and 3,258,073 have received a third dose or booster.

It comes as covid tests for vaccinated travellers to the UK are set to be scrapped.

Boris Johnson confirmed the change and said that the decision has been made because Britain is “moving through the Omicron wave.”

The Prime Minister added that the UK would becomes the most open economy and society in Europe as a result of the restriction lift.

It follows demands from airline operators and the wider tourism industry, which have been severely hit by Covid-19 measures.

Changes to international travel rules by the UK government are usually mirrored by similar moves from the Scottish Government.
