Scottish Government announces no deaths and 2,513 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that nobody has died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 2,513 new cases had also been identified overnight.

According to the Scottish Government, the backlog of results being processed at the Glasgow Lighthouse laboratory has now been cleared.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 9,143.

There are currently 910 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 64 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 637,266.

To date 4,317,601 people have received their first vaccination with 3,907,056 having a second jab.

The figures come as Covid cases are rising in a remote corner of Scotland as the country battles the pandemic.

That's according to the latest data from the Public Health Scotland's coronavirus dashboard, which reports the number of positive tests for the infection and their locations.

The Orkney Islands have recorded 91 Covid infections over the past seven days in the week from October 19 to 35 - that's 57 more than the previous week for a population of 22,400.

The island has jumped from the area in Scotland with one of the lowest case rates to one of the highest in the space of a week - with a rate of 406.3 per 100,000 people.

The reason for this is because the data covers smaller areas, so if an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the cases per 100,000 significantly.
