Scottish Government announces no deaths and 2,288 Covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that there have been no new deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 2,288 new cases have also been identified overnight, brining the total since the pandemic began to 685,815.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 9,389.

There are currently 771 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 57 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,330,321 people have received their first vaccination with 3,929,012 having a second jab and 1,208,387 having a third "booster".

The figures come as a top covid adviser to Nicola Sturgeon has suggested Scots should limit the number of people they meet each week as a way of reducing infections.

Professor Devi Sridhar said the vaccine passport scheme could be extended to more venues and the "tightening of indoor settings where it's risky".

Under current rules, people over 18 need to show proof of vaccination to enter nightclubs and large events like concerts and football matches.

The University of Edinburgh academic on global health also backed extending the covid vaccine booster programme to those under-40.
