Scottish Government announces no deaths and 1,237 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that no people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland also showed that 1,237 new cases had been identified overnight.

It means the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – remains the same at 7,848.

There are currently 480 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 64 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 337,471.

To date 3,997,105 people have received their first vaccination with 3,079,492 having a second jab.

The figures come as Health Secretary Sajid Javid has been slammed for saying the public should not “cower” from coronavirus.

He went into self-isolation earlier this month after testing positive for Covid-19 but said he had made a "full recovery" this weekend.

Javid, who replaced Matt Hancock in the UK Government cabinet, added that his symptoms had been very mild due to the vaccine.

However, he also said: “Please - if you haven’t yet - get your jab, as we learn to live with, rather than cower from, this virus.”

Scots Professor Devi Sridhar, who advises First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on covid was among those who reacted.

She said: "This must be painful to read for those who were severely ill & for those who lost loved ones to COVID.

"It wasn’t because they were weak- just unnecessarily exposed to a virus.

"And wanting to avoid getting COVID isn’t ‘cowering’- it’s being sensible & looking out for others.”

The Tory Health Secretary has since apologised by tweeting: “I was expressing gratitude that the vaccines help us fight back as a society, but it was a poor choice of word and I sincerely apologise.

“Like many, I have lost loved ones to this awful virus and would never minimise its impact.”
