Scottish Government announces no covid deaths and 1240 cases in 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that no Scots have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland also showed that 1240 new cases had also been identified overnight.

The death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – remains at 7992.

There are currently 360 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 40 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 354,687

To date 4,024,852 people have received their first vaccination with 3,323,466 having a second jab.

The figures come as Scotland prepares for 'freedom day' on Monday, August 9.

The country will finally drop the legal requirement for social distancing when indoors on Monday, more than 18 months after emergency restrictions were first imposed to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

Nightclubs, music venues and theatres can reopen their doors and large outdoor festivals such as TRNSMT will be allowed to go ahead.

But unlike in England, people will still be expected to wear face masks when using public transport or visiting shops.
