Scottish Government announces no coronavirus deaths overnight with 132 new cases

A further 132 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland with no new deaths overnight.

The Scottish Government released the latest figures today after the first weekend of pubs and restaurants reopening.

67 people remain in hospital with Covid-19 while 9 are requiring intensive care treatment.

A total number of 226,052 people have tested positive for the virus since the pandemic began.

While 7,659 have tragically lost their lives.

2,824,955 people have now received their first dose of the vaccine while 1,326,599 have received their second.

The latest figures for Scotland come as a covid expert has backed proposals for second school pupils to receive the vaccine.

Professor Linda Bauld, of Edinburgh University, said a number of countries are already giving the jab to 16 and 17-year-olds in a bid to reach herd immunity.

She told the Record: “A number of countries already include 16 and 17 year olds in their Covid-19 vaccine programme, but to extend to younger age groups requires data from clinical trials with children which are underway.

“Pfizer have already reported topline results from their trial with 12-15 year olds in the USA. The results were positive in terms of efficacy as was the safety profile.

"The MHRA [Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency] would need to approve it for use in the UK including in Scotland, and we will need to wait and see whether that occurs.”

She added: "I can see a number of reasons for extending the vaccine programme to adolescents in order to contribute to population immunity.

“But I'd wait to see what regulators decide.”
