Scottish Government announces nine deaths and 1,179 Covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that nine people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland also showed that 1,179 new cases had been identified overnight.

It means the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – sits at 7,911.

There are currently 474 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 63 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 341,307.

To date 4,002,903 people have received their first vaccination with 3,125,690 having a second jab.

The latest figures were announced on Wednesday afternoon (Adam Gerrard / Sunday Mirror)

The figures come as people entering Scotland from the European Union and the United States could avoid quarantine if they are fully vaccinated, under new travel plans.

Scottish Government ministers are currently in conversation with UK Government officials about introducing the measure for holidaymakers.

Any changes could come into force next week, with a decision expected at some point today - according to reports.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney was asked about the plan on the BBC 's Good Morning Scotland earlier today.
