Scottish Government announces four deaths and 177 new covid cases in last 24 hours

Four people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 177 new cases had been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 7,647.

There are currently 93 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 12 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic hit stands at 224,851.

To date 2,764,607 people have received their first vaccination with 993,180 having a second jab.

The figures come as dozens of cases of the Indian variant have been detected in the UK, with four found in Scotland among a total of 103 across the nation.

Government ministers have been downplaying the threat the strain poses to the UK, noting that there is currently no evidence it spreads quicker or renders vaccines less effective.

However, India has reported a global daily record of more than 314,000 new infections as a grim surge in the virus has overwhelmed a fragile health care system.
