Scottish Government announces 7 deaths and 2,190 new covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government have confirmed seven coronavirus deaths overnight and a further 2,190 new positive cases.

The latest figures were announced this afternoon as the virus continues to spread across the country.

435 people are currently in hospital with 42 requiring intensive care as they battle the virus.

This time last week 306 people were in hospital with 25 requiring intensive care

A total of 309,665 Scots have now caught coronavirus since the start of the pandemic with 7,750 deaths recorded.

3,920,145 people have now had their first dose of the vaccine while 2,861,110 have had their second.

The new figures come as Scotland’s ailing Test and Protect system has suffered another blow after an IT glitch hampered the vital service.

Some staff were unable to fully do their job yesterday due to a failure to upgrade key software.

Separately, it was announced that extra staff would be drafted in amid claims contact tracing had been “overwhelmed” by a surge in covid cases.

More people in Lanarkshire have also tested positive for coronavirus than in Australia.

Approximately one in every 13 people in Lanarkshire has now tested positive for coronavirus and in recent weeks the county has seen some the highest rates of new cases in Europe according to the World Health Organisation.
