Scottish Government announces 56 coronavirus deaths in Scotland amid 1,357 new cases

56 more more people have died from  coronavirus in Scotland in the past 24 hours, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

The latest figures show there were 1,357 new Covid-19 cases recorded overnight, bringing the total number of positive cases to 79,017 since the pandemic began.

Leading today's briefing, deputy First Minister John Swinney said Scotland's death toll now sits at 3,244.

According to the data, 1,228 people are currently being treated in hospital with 96 in intensive care.

It comes as three parts of Scotland officially move up to tougher levels of coronavirus restrictions today - and there are fears it could get worse.

Angus, Fife, and Perth and Kinross are now officially in the third tier joining Central Belt areas including Glasgow and Edinburgh.

However, councils in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS region have been warned they might go to the highest fourth level at the next review.

Yesterday, First Minister Nicola Strurgeon warned: "We are concerned about some areas - particularly across the Central Belt, where case numbers have stabilised but they have stabilised at a stubbornly high level.

"That creates a risk for the winter period, and it also makes the risks associated with the Christmas period higher as well.

"We will be considering this carefully over the next few days and assessing whether further action is required."
