Scottish Government announces 50 deaths and 3,667 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government has confirmed that 50 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures for Scotland showed that 3,667 new cases had also been identified overnight.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 8,514.

There are currently 1,011 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 79 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 550,090.

To date 4,168,278 people have received their first vaccination with 3,820,182 having a second jab.

The figures come as oil giant BP is the latest company to be hit by the HGV driver shortage.

This is leading to a reduction of petrol and diesel deliveries to forecourts across the country to ensure supplies do not run dry.

The HGV sector has been struggling with recruitment in recent months with a combination of the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit reducing the number of available drivers.

Meanwhile Scotland's national health service is currently facing one of its biggest crisis as it attempts to deal with the high number of covid cases across the country.

Soldiers, taxi firms and firefighters have been drafted in to help ease pressure on the ambulance service which is also at breaking point.

It comes as Health Secretary Humza Yousaf announced an additional £20 million worth of funding for the Scottish Ambulance Service to deal with the pressures on the system.
