Scottish Government announces 45 new coronavirus deaths in Scotland amid 908 cases

The Scottish Government has announced a further 45 coronavirus deaths have been recorded over the last 24 hours.

908 new cases of COVID-19 were reported overnight, taking the total figure to 190,913.

1,449 people are in hospital being treated for the deadly virus while 110 people remain in intensive care.

It comes as a public health expert has said people should be able to take holidays in Scotland this summer if the country continues to make progress in suppressing coronavirus.

Professor Linda Bauld said while holidays abroad will be “off the cards for a while”, she is hopeful people will be able to take breaks domestically.

She also voiced hope that pubs and restaurants will open up again in the next few months, and “people should be hopeful that we’re not going to be stuck in this situation indefinitely”.

Her comments follow the news that the UK’s R range of between 0.7 and 0.9 confirmed that measures including hospitalisations and deaths also show a shrinking outbreak. The R range is the number of people an infected person will pass the virus on to.
