Scottish Government announces 29 deaths and 8,495 covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government have confirmed 29 people have died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

It brings the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 10,122.

The latest figures for Scotland showed 8,495 new cases had also been identified overnight, with figures now including LFD and PCR tests.

There are currently 1,571 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 44 being treated in intensive care.

So far 4,401,876 people have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccination and 4,092,558 given a second dose, while 3,223,113 have received a third dose or booster.

The news follows many restrictions in Scotland are set to be lifted from Monday following Nicola Sturgeon's update yesterday.

The First Minister confirmed that nightclubs, which have been closed for at least three weeks, can now reopen as normal.

Pubs and restaurants which had certain measures implemented during the festive period will also be lifted at the same time.

It comes as businesses such as those in the hospitality industry have struggled since the measures were first announced.

The decision comes as the number of Omicron cases has slowed down.
